Mercy Health and Saint Joseph Mercy Health System announced today that Justin Abdelkader, Detroit Red Wings forward and alternate captain, will be a spokesperson for the health care system.

“Mercy Health and Saint Joseph Mercy Health System provide remarkable health care for communities across the state,” said Abdelkader. “From my earliest beginnings, to my professional career, this hospital system has cared for me.”

Abdelkader was born in 1987 at Hackley Hospital in Muskegon, part of the Mercy Health system. A graduate of Mona Shores High School in Muskegon, he went on to play hockey for Michigan State University, the Grand Rapids Griffins and since 2010, the Detroit Red Wings.

“Justin Abdelkader is a great spokesperson for Mercy Health. With his ties to Muskegon, Grand Rapids and Southeast Michigan, he can speak into the communities Mercy Health and St. Joe’s serves across the state,” said Rob Casalou, president and CEO, Mercy Health and Saint Joseph Mercy Health System. “Being a professional athlete, Justin knows the significant difference a healthy lifestyle and outstanding medical care can make.”

As a spokesperson for Mercy Health and Saint Joseph Mercy Health System, Abdelkader will appear in commercials and at special events across the state to help promote the entire Michigan system.

Abdelkader joins Matthew Stafford, quarterback for the Detroit Lions, who has been a celebrity spokesperson for Saint Joseph Mercy Health System since 2017. Both will represent the health system across the state.
