Thousands of students have had free student heart screenings sponsored by Mercy Health Muskegon since 2012, when the program began. The most recent screening, on Wednesday, August 8, resulted in the most students ever screened in one evening: 169.
Students came primarily from seven school districts — Grand Haven, Oakridge, Montague, Fruitport, West Michigan Christian, Mona Shores, Reeths Puffer — although it’s not unusual for students and their families to travel to this event from across the state.
In the past, screenings have identified significant health issues for some students. This year, several students were referred to their PCPs for follow-up, due to elevated blood pressure.
The final free screening for 2018 will take place on the Mercy Health Hackley Campus in Youngberg Auditorium on Wednesday, August 22. Participants are encouraged to register early at www.MercyHealth.com/StudentHeart.
