New Labor and Delivery Rooms at Mercy Health Saint Mary’s Open for Patients on January 9, 2018

The first phase of the Mercy Health Birth Center at Saint Mary’s, which includes the Labor and Delivery unit, opens for patients on January 9, 2018.

Family-focused care was the theme for the remodeled labor and delivery unit, with patients participating in focus groups that helped shape its design.

“We designed the patient rooms to be more spacious, with a designated family space,” said Susan Bankhead, DNP CCRN-K CNML, Clinical Service Director, Maternal Child Services. “We included those details that will really enhance the experience, including larger sleeper couches for support persons and chairs with high arms, which will promote breastfeeding with its design.”

The renovated rooms promote the optimal birth experience with jet showers, soothing music and controlled lighting.

In addition to the nine labor and delivery rooms , the renovated portion includes:

  • Two identical operating rooms for ease of clinical workflow, with a designated area for baby and support person
  • Triage area where maternal patients are assessed by a certified OB hospitalist and registered nurse
  • A family lounge with free coffee and water for loved ones, while they await their bundles of joy.

Completed after eight months, the first phase of the Birth Center’s renovation will be followed by Phase 2, which will include a portion of the Postpartum unit, which is expected to be complete in the fall of 2018. The renovation is occurring in a total of three stages to allow for continued care.
