Congratulations to Brandon Francis, MD, MPH, neuro-critical care provider, who was awarded the Physician Appreciation Award during the autumn of 2017. According to Nursing Coordinator Theresa McGuire, MSN, RN-BC, “There was not a dry eye on the (nursing) Work Environment Council voting committee when we read Dr. Francis’ nomination.”
On October 31, 2017, Francis was honored with the award by his Intensive Care Unit colleagues on Hauenstein 2, where he treats patients with. He was nominated by Nurse Rachel Edgett, who said the following about him:
“The patient’s bleed was very large, and his condition was serious, but when I saw that Dr. Francis was taking care of this patient, I knew he would be in good hands. Dr. Francis worked in a way I can only describe as being the patient’s guardian angel. He directed his colleagues with ease and explained the rationale for each decision he made. The situation was quite intense, but he was continually at the bedside making sure this very sick patient was treated with excellent care. Never once did he express any frustration or annoyance with my constant concerns.
“He sat with me in this patient’s room for hours and even came in when he wasn’t scheduled to make sure the patient was cared for properly. He sat down with the patient’s wife and explained to her the situation and the options of care for her husband. She expressed so much gratitude for the extra time he spent educating her and the compassion he showed.”
Congratulations again to Francis, whose compassion for patients and their families is a great example of incorporating the Mercy Health Core Values into his day’s work.
